The salespeople were not rude, they just were not very knowledgeable...
The checkout area of the store always worked very well for me and I was able to return items there with no hassle whatsoever.
Oh yeah, this store also has restrooms, which the K Mart on 34th Street does not... a small thing but a definite plus for this branch.

Visiting St. Marks Place / East Village / Union Square and need a public restroom? There's one here! First, you should know the entrance is by the corner of Lafayette and 8th. Once inside, the restrooms are located on the top floor. I have to say, I have been in this Kmart, but I didn't actually use the bathroom (though I'm glad to know it's an option, for future trips to this area).
The store in general was fairly clean, especially for a saturday evening, when I was there. I also thought the prices were great, because anything you want to get at a smaller pharmacy in the city is always going to be (IMO) overpriced. I bought bandaids for 3 bucks and antacid for 5 or so. Only real issue is that there weren't enough people at the registers checking people out, so the line moved a little slower than I'd have liked.
I'm sure I'll be back. -

Brooklyn, NYTHE ENTRANCE IS THE REVOLVING DOORS ON THE CORNER OF LAFAYETTE AND 8TH!!!!
i walked around the entire block looking for the doors to this place. other stores on the block actually get walk-ins looking for this kmart entrance.
i just needed towels and found them on the second floor. while i was there, i browsed the clothing dept and the selection was a little, well, crappy.
my cashier was fine and polite. nothing to really complain about. (except the stupid doors) -

New York, NYYet another shopper update from CH the KMart Queen!! Okay so, tlisten...his time I went by to get an old snapshot copied. It was a color pic, probably taken in ...1999. I had never even seen the negative. I asked at the Photo Shop in the lobby if they could do it. They were very gracious, but said no: they only made black and white copies. Then, they referred me to another store, telling me I could get EXACTLY what I wanted (color copies of my one of a kind pic) at that place. Not K Mart, note. Now, I want to say, no way was the sistah showing me the door..she was in fact - helping me to get what I was after. Which I did get..at Walgreen's. This kind of dedication to the customer is praiseworthy indeed. And yes, I will certainly continue to shop at KMart. No problem!!3 Previous Reviews: Show all »

New York, NYCheapest place to buy in bulk within the east village. Toilet paper, underwear, flip flops, you name it. The employees arent very helpful but considering what theyre probably getting paid who could blame them. -

Greenwich Village, Manhattan, NYWell I hope this doesn't come back to haunt me that I actually admit to shopping here (its cheap, and has a ton of stuff, sue me ;0 ) but you tell me where you else you can go in the village to find: Flip-Flops, socks, a dust-buster, hammer, nails, and cranberry-lemonade all under one roof? I thought so.. The place is three stories high (typical for an NYC department store) and really does have a lot of general day-to-day items. Ill admit it can be annoying to lug a huge shopping cart in an elevator with a lady with screaming kids up and down, but I managed to consolidate all my items into a large hand cart by the end (wasn't going through the elevator game a second round). I actually found the staff more then helpful, and even had a manager personally take me to the third floor to find the dust busters (tucked away). The store is neat and pretty well put together. Checkout is on the main floor and the street level (which connects to the subway line). Overall a fine experience shopping in NYC (even though I'll deny til the grave that you saw me shopping here if you asked beyond the friendly confines of yelp.) -

New York, NYI hate coming here unless I absolutely need to. The customer service really sucks. I understand that's it's a shitty job and they really don't want to be working there.
I've been here numerous times and I can't recall even one time when I had a good experience. The cashiers never greet you and they don't even look at you when they're ringing up the items. They just hand you your receipt without saying a word. I had to return something last night and there was something going on with the computers. It took forever to get a manager over and when it was finally done, the girl just handed me the receipt wordlessly. I got no apology from anyone, even though I had to wait there for at least ten minutes.
The only good thing about this place is that some of their products are cheap and it's huge, so you can usually find everything you need. -

With a dearth of department store options in downtown Manhattan, this Kmart is the only game in town. I only come in here for the bulk basics; toilet paper, paper towels, kitty litter, etc. I also come here to buy Secret Santa gifts and gifts for my love ones, because I'm cheap. If you need something in bulk and you're too lazy to trek out to the other boroughs, then this is your spot. -

As I write this review, the K-Mart that I have visited on occasion in New Jersey is closing down. There was never anyone in there, the prices were too high and frankly it didn't shock me when it put up the "Going out of Business" sign.
In sharp contrast, this Astor Place mainstay is always busy. I attribute much of its regular business to the local student population and tourists who seem to wander in from who knows where. It's not the nicest, cleanest or even the most organized K-Mart I've ever been to, but it certainly is the busiest and it's remained in business for a long time.
This K-Mart is almost the "anti" K-Mart. It has an entrance from a subway station (Astor Place), it's prices are a bit higher, but no one cares because they're still cheaper than say, buying your dishwashing liquid at the local bodega. They carry a large selection of casual clothing that isn't the best quality, but you're not exactly paying back breaking prices either. Their staff is extremely friendly and has always been very helpful to me. Even when the cashiers have relatively long lines, I've never needed more than 5-10 minutes to check out. In so many ways, this store dashes away my preconceptions of K-Mart, and that probably explains why I come back so frequently.
Another reason I return is a bit more specific to me. I'm a toy collector, and for some reason there are times when this store carries certain toys that no one else seems to, so I occasionally hunt in their toy section for items to add to my collection. It's only successful maybe 2 out of 5 times, but when I do find something, it's usually quite significant.
In this area, K-Mart is basically where you go to get that "thing" you need but can't find anywhere else at a non-outrageous price. On my most recent visit I needed a belt for instance, and you'd be surprised how hard a good, simple, business casual belt is to find in the area (that doesn't cost over $35). I hope it stays for a long time to come.
