la mar-cebucheria peruana

Posted on 17:45 by Unknown
Well, just from what you can see from the outside area, this is a pretty posh place on Madison Square East...
There must be quite a crowd for executive dining here (as well as better off tourists) and lovers of what I take is Peruvian food.

Let us see what Yelp says--mixed reviews, because I guess people feel at these prices they should be getting a lot in all departments...very few restaurants fill the bill that way for everyone--but this place does awfully well, I feel

Located across from Madison Square park, his place is pretty spacious. It has a upstair and a downstair with bar. Wish there were more cerviche restaurants like this in NY. They have a location in SF that I LOVE! I think the NY location doesn't have as many selections on their menu.
My favorite cerviche is their nikei: tuna seasoning is spectacular and portion is large enough to share.
Their seafood arrozo is very yummy too, full of octopus, shrimp and clams...with just enough spice to give it a little kick.

Although the location and the decor of the place was quite grand the food in my opinion was definitely subpar of even a three star quality restaurant. I had went here with a group of my girls to try their restaurant week menu which was overall very disappointing. For appetizer I had a scallop salad with balsamic vinaigrette. The scallop was cooked well with a nice sear on both side and I did quite enjoy the dressing on the salad.

For entree however I had the hanger steak with the potato dish and I found this dish to be shockingly disappointing. The steak I had asked for to be cooked medium well and looked pretty well done. The sauce that came along with the steak failed to serve its purpose. There was just too much of the sauce not to mention it was ridiculously salty even for my affinity for salty dishes. This made it  really impossible to enjoy it. The potatoes were soaked in this sauce as well which made it soggy. This dish also came along with a side or rice which was OK but nothing special at all.

For dessert I had the panna cotta which appeared to be served over a crumbled cinnamon-y bits and it was also accompanied by a "queso helado ice cream with chocolate sauce". I did not enjoy the texture of the dessert at all. The panna cotta over the crumbled bits was satisfactory but everything on this plate reminded me too much of a mushy baby food-esque.

I have previously visited their San Francisco location which was an awesome experience. However, when visiting the New York location this January for Winter Restaurant Week my lunch experience was less than perfect.

Our waiter was clueless throughout the entire seating. There were three other tables on the floor and the restaurant was practically empty. After our appetizers were served, we waited for our entrees for over thirty minutes. Our entrees were probably forgotten as we watched the table across from us receive their entrees even though they were seated after us. The dessert I ordered ended up on someone else's table and I received the wrong dessert. When I pointed this out to our waiter, he quickly apologized and offered me the extra dessert that I did not order on the house and ran over to the other table to grab my dessert since it has yet to be "touched." Who does that? The duration of our lunch lasted about two hours which could have been over in an hour.

Potato Causa: Forgettable. San Francisco's version was spectacular.

Ceviche: Ok. Have had better ceviche at nearby restaurant Raymi.

Lomo Saltado: Good flavor and steak was prepared well.

Chaufa De Quinoa: Delicious! Perfect harmony of ingredients. Must try!

Combinado, Dulce De Leche, Custard: All desserts were equally tasty. Custard was my favorite.

Quality menu and food but poor service ruined the entire dining experience. I really hope this was a one-off. Hopefully, dinner service is better.

If you want to host an event for your famiy and friends have great food and have a good time, go somewhere else.these guys don't care for your business. We have been literally chasing them for a month to pay in advance and formalize, and they never pick upnthe phone, reply or show interest,

Food is good, but not like to make me beg you to give them my money

Awesome chicken empanadas - probably the best I've had in NYC (empanadas de aji de gallina).

I thought the arroz criollo, which is basically a fried rice paella, was solid - but I wouldn't get it again. The people I was with loved the asado de tira - the short rib entree.

The tiradito laqueado - seared tuna Peruvian 'sashimi' - was the best of the tiraditos. The passion fruit sauce was great.

Our server was really nice, and the maracuya (passion fruit) sour drink is something I highly recommend. If you're afraid of egg whites being in it, don't be. A very good experience over all.

Awesome experience with this restaurant. the causa trio was delish, arroz con pato, Pisco sour, lomo saltado  and the ceviche exquisite. I just wish the music wasn't too loud. Try the picarones.

Went for my husband's birthday with party of 4. This place is beautiful! Decor is very nice!  Food is just amazing! Every single dish was so delicious! La mar sangria is so good! Ricardo out server was so sweet. He took care of your table! One of the best servers ever! At the end my husband got a dessert with a candle for his bday. It was so nice! Service was good and so was the food,
Over priced for the amount of food every dish was served like an appetizer. Very small amounts

    More like 4.5.
What can I say that hasn't already been said. Nothing! I simply love this place, and whenever in NYC we always visit. Amazing lomo saltado, Nikkei cebiche, pisco sour, picarones, and the list goes on. Great location and ambiance. Loved the La Mar in San Fran, loved the one in Lima, and I can't wait to try more.

Had a wonderful dining experience at La Mar last night.  Beautiful setting.  Started out with perfect pisco sours!  The tiraditos of local fish and octopus was EXCELLENT.  I'm going to try to get the recipe for leche de tigre... they sure know how to marinate their fish.  The ceviche was superb as well.  Tried the soft shell crab special which was recommended by our waiter.  The veal cheeks entre melted in  our mouths as was the grilled octopus.  They sure know how to cook octopus.  Yum!  Deserts from Peruvian fruit were special as well.  Service was attentive and gracious.  Definitely a must visit restaurant!
