And now Modell's Sporting Goods on 42nd Street at Grand Central

Posted on 17:41 by Unknown
Over the years, Modell's has carved out a spot for itself as a middle-of-the road sporting goods store with a good number of branches..

I have been to this one near Grand Central and it wasn't bad --I didn't find what I really wanted though-- and  the one I used to go to in Yorkville earlier was much better..

Wonder what our Yelp'ers will say...Well, mixed, as I would have thought...people in NYC get very angry if they do not find exactly what they want at a store like this, --something peculiar about that,
they would not expect as much from Macy's..oh well, there is still Paragon

One tirade against the place that will knock your socks off...

Gotta love Mo's, all the team gear for less.

This Modell's location is far too small.  From the outside it looks to be a decent size, however, once you step inside you realize it's not large at all.

I was recently walking around, doing some shopping, when I noticed this location.  I typically go to the other Modell's locations but decided to give this one a try.  The downstairs was full of jerseys, knick knacks, and clothing.  Very cramped and not much of a selection.  I went upstairs and checked out the Womens section, which only included workout gear and no jerseys of any sort.  Also on the second floor is the shoe selection.  Not many sneakers to choose from, but the cleats selection looked decent.  The staff was standing around chit chatting instead of doing much else.  I suppose this location will work for you if you need something VERY basic, but that's about it.

A store that has NY team stuff.  Was able to find a nice and interesting NYY cap, made me very happy indeed.

They aren't very friendly, but hey it's 42nd Street in NYC.  Whatever.

It's a boy store! It smells like boys and sneakers and has these giant sports jerseys hanging everywhere. I was clearly out of my element but came for the only girlie thing they sell: white roller skates with pink wheels for my Halloween costume.

I anticipated that roller skates in Manhattan would be more ubiquitous than actually they are. It turns out that Modell's is the only store in all five boroughs that sells old school roller skates for girls. For the reasonable price of $39.99. Whether or not it is a good idea to spend an entire Halloween party drinking copiously on roller skates, well, check back with me next week.

Five stars for stocking skates but as for everything else- just average.

This location isnt very good. The first floor is all professional jerseys and stuff like that. Not a good selection.

Upstairs is everything else. Its like no one cleans from the time they open until after they close. Stuff thrown everywhere.  Not a large selection of actual equipment. Its mostly just clothing and some sneakers.

they did have a kids size varsity type rangers jacket with the 1994 patches all over it for $20 and i almost bought it but it was a youth medium and id need a large. I shoulda just bought it...kickin myself now. What a weird find.

While the customer service is excellent, this Modell's store is a constant disappointment when it comes to looking for the right-sized McDavid braces. Exercise equipment and baseball gloves are also hit-or-miss. The shoe selection is quite possibly the worst of all the stores I have visited.

At the same time, with a store located in such a prime location (right outside of Grand Central) and the high volume of customers, that hardly comes as a surprise. After all, this is easily one of the smallest Modell's in the city.

Come for the simple stuff and you will avoid disappointment, which is an often occurrence for this patron.

Hmm, I thought Modell's was a sporting goods "superstore."  Maybe other locations are nicer, but this is the only one I've visited.  It's pretty dumpy.  Prices are good, but if you're looking for shoes, I suggest you go to a real shoe store with salespeople who can advise you on what you need.  The fitting room is like an upright plywood coffin with a mirror.

This place blows.  I want a Giants Jersey, but all this place has is Reuben Droughns!  Reuben Droughns????  Why are you stocked with 120 of the Giants' 4th string running back's jerseys????  Even Reuben Droughns doesn't want that many of his jerseys....

Pretty bad place.  People that work there are miserable and not willing to really help.  Place is cramped and poorly laid out.  As soon as you walk in you want to leave as soon as possible.  No gift boxes available.  Just all around bad place.  Only redeeming factor is they have NY sports team paraphernalia all over the place on the first floor, but that's about it.

I actually started working here back in Sept 07 (no longer do). This is the flagship store for Modells. If there is something you want, and can be gotten, this is the place you need to go to get it, not only will they make 100% effort, the staff here is the best of the best. While I don't agree with some of Modell's as a companys policies, this store is where to go to get what you need.

Zero stars for the service here but had to put 1 jus for the chamce to post. Went there this morning and found a pair of shoes i liked and had a SALE tag on it. My luck they didnt have my size. So i had asked if another modells store had my size n the two workers( 1-middle aged african american lady & 1- young i think hispanic girl) says yes so they sent me to the 1293 broadway or Herald Square location. Got to that location found the size that i needed BUT it wasnt on sale. So i tell the girl who was helping me that the exact same pair of shoes were on sale at the 51 east 42nd st. location. She then calls the 51 east location and the person on the phone looks up the shoe on the computer and it shows that the shoe is NOT on sale. The worker helping me at 1293 broadway location tells the person on the phone that I said i seen the shoe on sale at the 51 east store. The person on the phone then checks n sed yes but its a mistake. The worker now at the 1293 location then talks to a supervisor or manager and the manager tells me that they cant give me the sale price because its not their stores screw up its the 51 east locations screw up. He then tells me to go all the way back to 51 east location buy the size that dont fit n come back to 1293 broadway n return it for a size that fits. Me n my gf take a cab back to 51 east n see the same 2 workers that helped me earlier n they even remember my size n what shoe i wanted. I then tell them the situation n i see that the SALE TAG is no longer on that shoe. They then tell me very sarcasticly n in a making fun of me manner that I should have bought it earlier when the tag was on it or came back a little earlier because they jus changed the tag. (AFTER THEY GET THE CALL FROM 1293 BROADWAY). I then tell them that i would have if they had my size. N they say oh well we cant do anything now. WOW i have worked in retail before n HAVE NEVER GIVIN OR EXPERIENCED THIS KIND OF BAD N THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!!!!!!  I WILL NEVER SHOP THERE AGAIN!!!!!!! N I WILL TELL EVERYBODY I MEET N KNOW NOT TO SHOP THEIR EITHER!!!!!!

on the way to school, walked inside to look for water repellant  spray for my ugg boots since the snow/rain totally seeped through them

customer service = great .... front door man directed me to where I could ask someone who knew and other CS man showed me directly to the product
I bought the water & stain repellant ($4.99) and suede cleaner as well ($4.99) which is the equivalant price of footlocker, which is great, except for NY's 8.375% sales tax, but then again, there is NO sales tax in jersey =), so that makes up for it!

Oh, my sales associate's name at the front counter was Kristin and she was nice too and helped me sign up for a rewards cards! Cute keychain card.
