Basics Plus-- Wow, am I Curious

Posted on 18:21 by Unknown
Wow, did my eyes open wide when I saw this little emporium on the Northern edge of Greenwich Village...decent looking home supplies of all sorts...

For people in the neighborhood (which is very well heeled  now) this must be a real "go-to" store....for people like me, it will probably just be an addend to the internet, the 99 cents stores and K Mart etc.

Well, I wonder what the Yelpers who have been here actually think...

Not bad, just that it is smaller than people would like and as I thought sort of on the pricey side ( I wouldn't mind browsing around here if I had the time, though, as I will after my next Yoga class down hear here_

The kids who work here are so sweet, and will help you with anything.  FYI they have an extensive bulb selection downstairs.  Also, I've never wanted for vacuum bags for my Miele whenever I've stopped in.  The owner's a sweetie, too.

I work near this place and try very hard to like it, but they're simply terrible. They never, ever have whatever it is I'm looking for (and I always check here first), their prices are high, and their staff is uninformed (if not dishonest).
Once I went in looking for a certain type of bracket and the guy told me they have them but that I would have to look through all their newly shipped boxes (a dozen or more) myself. And I did for 20 minutes... but they didn't have them.
Another time, I needed an odd key made but they wanted to charge me more than twice as much as my regular place charges.
Most recently, I went in looking for a particular type of hook that would hold 10 lbs. The guy assured me that what he sold me would be "totally fine" and now we have falling (7lb) picture frames! I'm done with them.

Very...well...basic selection of kitchen goods.  That's all.

I can't help but eye the stacks of simplehuman garbage receptacles hungrily every time I walk past this storefront on the way to the office each morning.  A kitchen garbage can is one thing that I neglected to move with me when I came up to NYC, and I've been using makeshift devices while trying to find the right fit for a small place.

Sadly, I always talk myself out of dropping the significant wad of cash that I can't justify for an object that I'm going to be tossing refuse into every day.  But they're pretty!

Basics Plus also carries a random assortment of other... basics... that one might need around the house as well.  I snagged a giant bag of plastic zipties on the cheap, and they have everything from light bulbs to coffee presses.  I guess the coffee presses fall into the "Plus" category.

Solid and reliable, that's how I think of this place.

You know some hardware stores in the city, you walk in and you get this feeling like you're going to be ripped off.  You know, you're out of your league in terms of knowledge, and somehow it'll be fun to trick you into buying something you don't need or don't want.

This place doesn't seem to do that.  They seem helpful and not pushy.  They also have a lot of knick nacks and stuff you'd be surprised to find so close by.

Still they're not cheap, but like a deli super convenient and carry most of what you want.

Hi - are you shopping here? You are overpaying. How do I know? Because everything is marked up ridiculously. Drill - $60 Same drill on Amazon - $25. $2.75 to copy a basic key! I suggest buying online or going to Artie's on 14th between 6th and 7th or any other hardware store. You are welcome.

Don't go here for keys.  I have gone twice (stupidly) and both times I was not able to use the duplicate keys made.  Ok if you need to buy household items.  But one star for screwing me twice.

It's tiny and cramped but has a variety of useful household items- whether it's hardware for kitchen, bathroom and basement.  I like that they also carry Meyer's Soap items as well.  The owners are also friendly and helpful as well.

Basics Plus has a great selection, and all of the people there are knowledgable. They have always been able to help me find what I need (even if I don't know exactly what it is I need) and provide information (often unprompted!) that helps ensure whatever apartment task I need to complete gets done ok.  Minus one star for the prices--but  I guess they need to charge more to pay for the usq storefront?
