People like Macy's more than you would think to hear them talk about it in ordinary conversation...I believe this is because it has become a "yardstick store" that people use as a decent place to which they compare everywhere else..

Wandered into The Mothership™ yesterday to do a little shopping, so I had to update my review. The store is in phase two of an incredibly massive renovation. The second phase of Macy's four-year renovation of Herald Square will mark key milestones in the epic transformation of The World's Largest Store. Phase Two will see the completion of the Main, Mezzanine and second floors of the store bridging both the Broadway and Seventh Ave. buildings by holiday 2013. For the first time in the store's history, the windows along Seventh Ave. will showcase dramatic views into the store and the Mezzanine Level will link the 34th and 35th St. sides of the Broadway Building, providing a seamless shopping experience for customers. A redesigned cosmetics and fragrances department, along with a reimagined Men's Store, relocated Visitor Center, and the re-opening of the Memorial Door entrance on 34th St. will create the most striking architectural and aesthetic changes to the interior and exterior of the iconic flagship.
If you've never been to this store, go. Now. Everyone needs to experience it once. You'll find so much more of what you're looking for, even if you've got the crowds through which you'll wade. Get some gelato at Stella 54 on 6. View the amazing array of furniture on 9. Take a look at the new Kiehl's counter adjacent to one of the new staircases on the ground level.
To me, this is Mecca. I love traveling here to shop, or work. There is nothing better than a day's experience here.

I had a wonderful experience getting a *free* "mini-facial" from Jessica at the Origins counter - she was incredibly friendly and pleasant to talk with. She explained the products to me, but there was zero pressure to purchase anything. I left with a ton of samples, detailed instructions for their use, *and* super-soft skin. I will definitely be back to purchase some of their products.
The only down side is the location - since the renovations, the Origins counter is located in a hallway between two escalators. It gives them a lot of foot traffic, but it's really busy and spread out and can make shopping there difficult. -

-tons of clothes, bags, shoes, home goods, jewelry, furniture, etc. i never leave this store empty handed.
-HELLO! starbucks and mcdonalds! as well as other eateries...
-affordable: macy's is an affordable store. c'mon now. get a macys card, use the coupons and voila! discounts galore!
-decent customer service. sales associates are nice but not pushy. i'm an impulse shopper and throw tons of items on the counter only to actually buy like 5. Every sales associate I've had have been super patient and joke about my shopping habits (a couple of them have asked me more than once if i worked there because they always see me in the store. i confess- i'm a shopaholic okay...don't judge)
CONS:
-always packed!!!
-tourist central!!! no offense, i welcome you all with open arms but seriously you guys walk super slow. what are you taking pictures of and gawking at? the clothing rack?!?
-walking through a cloud of perfume in the fragrance section. i walk outta there smelling like 25 different brands of perfume.
-its huuuge. hold on to your kids!
-2008. i left my phone in the lacoste section for literally 2 seconds only for some sticky fingers to steal it. security was no help. they looked bored. welp!

New York, NYHey its the largest store in the world right? It's busy, it's crowed and yes sometimes the staff is less than. However all you need is the right approach. First time going to the store? Here is how I would approach it.
1.) Go in the 34th street side, head straight down the escalator to coat check - unburden yourself of anything you are carrying
2.) Take the elevator right near there to the 6th floor, have a cappuccino/prosecco in the Stella 34 restaurant
3.) Plan your shopping - and then go for it. Start at the top, work your way to the bottom.
4.) Pick up your stuff from coat check.
Boom! shopping awesomeness.
**recommendations to the store**
1.) Ban phones from the staff, they seem to enjoy them a bit too much
2.) More people on clean-up
3.) the ladies in gift wrap could use some help - especially around the holidays -

Medford, NYI took two recent trips here, one back in late November and another one just a week ago. In November, we went to here to bring my stepmother to see Macys Christmas display. She lives out west, and enjoys NYC. There were tremendous crowds in the store( as it was black Friday) but we did not wait on the line very long to see Santa. There as not one person with us that was under 13 anymore, but it was still a great display to see(even Santa). The day would have been really enjoyable if we had not ran into a screaming woman on the escalator telling everyone to move faster as she was pushing into the crowds. My sister had about enough of her big mouth, so there was a little bit of a verbal argument there. Anger issues are not so uncommon in huge crowds though. (and of course in NYC)
The most recent trip was after seeing an early morning summer concert series in Central Park. We came in to browse and use the bathrooms.. Plenty of well stocked items and snack bars located all over the store. We were there at a time when there were very few crowds, so we actually encountered some very friendly employees. This place is always fun to visit, especially when there are so few people in the store. -

The service is better than the average department store. There are 6 floors in this place, so it can feel like a maze. It's best to go in here with one thing in mind and try not to get distracted by everything else. Nice and depressing, even and especially around Christmas or Valentine's day or Easter.
Novelties include wood lined escalators surviving from back in the day when the department store was king, and a basement where you can get fancy, fussy, overpackaged foods and then consume them in the crappiest, dingiest common eating area ever...a scene that smacks of a poorly maintained truck stop, except you ain't on a road trip.
It's strange because all the merchandise is current, but you just get the feeling that you fell backwards down a rabbit hole (and not in a good way), and that everything is just old and past.
Also, I lost my monthly Metrocard there, which is technically my own damn fault, but then trying to first locate and then speak with staff about it was an exercise in frustration and ultimately defeat.
It was a Friday night, and I went home alone to shut my eyes and hold back tears at the memory of a leaning tower of Gund Snuffles (http://upload.wikimedia.…) degradingly placed in the thruway to the grody ass mass-toilets, with two mini-bears seemingly snuggled up against each other for solace. -

This Macy's is intense. It's huge! Eight or nine stories in two connected buildings. I actually got lost and had to ask for directions out. The clothing selection is good (how could it not be with that much space?). There are food selections on every floor. I really like the wooden escalators, though I couldn't tell you exactly where to find them. If you come here, plan to stay a while. It's definitely not going to be your average trip to the department store. -

Tucson, AZI love Macy's and this particular location has a lot of history but it gets super packed and it's really hard to just go and shop. I love the Louis Vuitton and Gucci stores that are there. I am really kicking myself for not buying the dragonfly sunglasses that I saw there.
I can't wait to see the improvements after all of the construction is completed. They had great customer service and I left with a backpack that I needed. -

Stanford, CAThe flagship store is indeed a wonderful place. There's such a wide selection of the latest fashions as well as other things like furniture, restaurants, a tourist kiosk, and even a post office. On the upper levels, there are even old-fashioned escalators. I haven't been to a department store this grand since I visited the Galeries Lafayette in Paris.
