The Black Sheep...another Irish place

Posted on 18:05 by Unknown
It's funny, this is a nice spot with a certain raffish swagger to it and of course to some people it will be a "gin mill" etc. etc.

It seems to me people know what these places are like on the whole and again I sense a lot of crankiness in the poorer reviews..

Chicken Pot Pie is loaded with tender breast meat. Definitely the dish to order here. So good!

Love this bar!!  It is my favorite drinking spot in NYC.  The first time I ever went was for my bachelor party in February of 2011.  I walked in around noon with 3 of my friends. We drank pretty aggressively for 4 hours (beers, shots of Jameson, shots of Patron, etc.), and ran up a bar tab of over $300.  When I went to pay (we were the only ones in the bar the whole time), the bartender cleared the whole tab!!! We of course left a hefty tip and I have been back many times since.  For reviews of some specifics:

    PRICES:
Shots of Jameson are $4, Blue Moons are $4, Cosmos are $5...aka priced very well for a midtown NYC bar.

    SERVICE:
Especially now after we've been going back for a while, some of the bartenders know us by name, and pretty much everyone makes a point of saying hi when we walk in.  Supreme service, never waiting more than a minute or two for our order, even when the place is jam packed, which it usually is on a Friday or Saturday night.

    FOOD:
Nothing special, regular pub food quality, but again priced well.  The Irish bangers are probably my favorite thing on the menu.

Definitely recommend going to this place.

I will never go back. Short story - staff doesn't run the place, the regulars do.

Went for a weeknight dinner and drinks. Granted it was first round basketball playoffs Knicks v Celtics so it was full. The girl and I sat at a four top as that was all that was available. Bench seating one side, no chairs on the other. As our waitress watched, a group of older regular guys pulled up chairs to our table and set down their drinks. We had ordered dinner so I thought that was not acceptable but ok.

Then one of them ordered dinner and the waitress served it to him on our table while we were having ours. It is not ok for the staff to allow others to horn in on your table and most definitely not ok to then serve them dinner at it. I was shocked and furious.

Food - ok, nothing special. Burgers definitely are from frozen patties and I would steer clear. Shepard's Pie was my go to but it is just ok. Staff clueless and old enough to know better. Bartenders spend a lot of time chatting with regulars and god forbid you are in a hurry to get your check because they won't notice you waiving at them even if you are sitting at the bar.

I used to go for lunch from time to time but no more.

Came here a few weekends ago with a bunch of my friends during my friend's birthday celebration. The weather was pretty crappy outside, so this place wasn't too crowded. We were able to get a nice corner by ourselves and our server was a nice young Irish woman. There wasn't the largest selection of beers on tap, but we managed to make do.

Why only the 2 star review? As the night progressed, more people came in, and the young woman had to attend to other customers and then a young man came by to attend to us instead. He wasn't the most attentive, as we were charged twice for drinks that 2 people in our party had paid for before they had left. A shame, since the place was fine otherwise.

I came here for lunch with co-workers. They had a great deal for lunch where for only 10 bucks, you get a beer (Blue Moon, Stella Artois, Yuenling, or Bud Light) with some sort of an entree (burgers, sanwiches, etc.). The beer was calling my name, and you can't beat a deal like that, but we got tax returns to do after lunch. Yea, we're trying our best to get people like you the maximum refund, so we won't inebriate ourselves.

I ordered the black sheep super burger. It was super because it had all the fixins'-onions, mushrooms, bacon, and cheese. It came with a side of fries. This burger was not really my thing. The bun was toasted to the point that it felt like I was eating 2 thick slabs of crackers with my meat. I don't think any bun should be toasted up to that level. A couple of my co-workers agreed. The meat was not very juicy or flavorful at all. It reminded me of meat loaf. Not good. At least the fries were crunchy though.

For burgers, I'd definitely not come back. I'd rather eat one at Five Guys. Or Wharf, which serves up pretty good bar good. Wasted calories, and I went back to work feeling intoxicated anyways.

Black Sheep is a decent neighborhood pub in Tudor City. Only an OK, standard InBev beer selection (every bar in this city can now boast of Goose Island taps, with its recent acquisition). While the usual Murray Hill/Turtle Bay characters populate the booths, it does have a better neighborhood feel than some places above and below.

If you want a lighter dose of Joshua Tree ridiculousness, without the shenanigans but with the same solid music, you can do worse.

I work a couple blocks away and have been here a half dozen times over the last year and a half. Great prices on draft beers, and they pour a nice pint of Guinness. The bar staff is fast and friendly. The food is typical pub fare, but the Sheperd's Pie is outstanding, and everyone I know raves about the pot pie. Great place to go for a few beers and a burger, never overly crowded, and teh atmosphere is mellow, not at all rowdy, and not full of "kids". I recommend it!

It can get very crowded in here but when you work late nights it's a great place to unwind. I love the bartenders and the jukebox.

After watching the Ravens game next door at the Wharf, a group of friends and I stumbled in here and have been back a few times now. They have $10 pitchers and a variety of food options (all the appetizers on special are okay except the chili cheese fries--I was not a fan) -- it's basically your typical Third Ave Irish pub. But it's never too crowded, the bartenders are nice (they've even charged my phone for me a couple times), and it was a solid place to spend Sunday afternoons this fall.

Was looking for a quick burger and a pint with my buddy.  Wasn't expecting a gourmet, 5 star meal but also wasn't expecting the absolute garbage we were served.

Started with an order of wings, simple enough for a pub right?  The wings had a pretty good buffalo sauce but to call them miniature would be an understatement.  Considering 50% of the smaller than bite sized wings was bones, it was not exactly a healthy portion.

Small portion aside the wings were decent.  What really ruined the meal was the burger that followed.  I ordered a BBQ cheeseburger which the menu described as including "BBQ sauce, bacon, cheddar cheese, and sauteed onions."   Unfortunately my burger turned out to be an over cooked patty with ketchup on top.  Not even the standard single slice of lettuce, tomato, and onion that every restaurant in the world puts on a burger.  Just a charred patty and ketchup (and of course an extremely stingy portion of steak fries) obviously not what I was expecting.

My initial reaction was to think I had received the wrong burger, surely this was meant for someone else, but after checking, I was informed that in fact it was mine.  Needless to say it was not very good and I was left feeling hungry and dissatisfied.

Overall impression: if you're grabbing a few beers from their modest draft selection to watch the game, this place seems alright.  However, if you're looking for something to eat--GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.

I frequent this bar for their lunch special.
You can get a solid burger [which includes fries and a pickle] and a glass of house wine or draft beer for about $8.
The special also includes other menu items like a Grilled Chicken Sandwich and Fish N' Chips but I usually stick to the burger.
I'm not sure if I'd come here for a happy hour but I recommend this place if you are in Murray Hill and looking for quick burger.

    Bar review only:

The Black Sheep has all the usual pub digs and atmosphere. While just hanging out with some friends, the staff is still friendly and not pushy.

I wandered over here the other night when catching up with a couple of friends after work. This is a place for the relaxed, laid-back vibe. We all had a few pints while pondering and rooting for the Yankees - so it can be a wee bit noisy but the conversation was still flowing.

Oh, and there is PBR on tap. For you know, when you're feeling extra classy.

They pour a nice pint of Guinness and their Chicken Pot Pie is outstanding. Even better, they have coleman's mustard on request.

I highly recommend this place for a nice pint during lunch. Any other time, it's just another Irish Bar for you B&T peeps. Go ahead, enjoy the beer you're drinking, it's 2 bucks less during the day and no, it doesn't come with a free spray tan.
