Westin Hotel on 42nd Street

Posted on 18:04 by Unknown

Another big classy, glassy Midtown Hotel which I have not visited in years...it could have been through so much since I was last there (when it was a kind of high tech functional-more-or-less elegant place with obviously extremely attentive staff)..

And today?-- More mixed reviews on Yelp--by the way, I checked the reviews on Expedia.com and they were higher ( why? does Yelp get all the complainers, having the reputation that it does not hold back on bad reviews?)

Loved it! Impressed from the moment i walked in. Nice spacious room and super comfy bed. Free fruit infused water in the lobby which was great because it was scalding HOT outside. Free massive green apples in the gym. I liked that too :)

con: shower curtain was too short and left a gap where the tub ends which left water all on the floor.

I wish I could give zero stars.

I purchased a room for the week for my cousin and his family visiting from Greece. It was his wife and kids first time in the US.

The bad signs started with check in when the room type requested and reserved was not available for them. They were eventually moved to the proper room but still a pain in the ass for a family of 4 with all of their luggage to switch rooms the 2nd day there .

Fast forward to last night, 8-7-13, they get back to their room last night after site seeing and magically 2500 eruos in cash is gone from their locked, in-room safe. no forced entry - no signs of a break in. If this isn't an employee then I don't know what it could be. Great impression for my family's first trip to the US.

$1300 for the room + 2500 Euros stolen - now the joy of dealing with the NYPD which is always a good time.

    Never again.

Just checked out of the Westing GC for the 4th time in the past 3 months. Now I like Westin hotels normally - for work and vacation - and even have a Heavenly Bed at home.

This specific hotel has a great gym and I also like the bar-area. Great to relax and quite lively.

Like other reviewers said check in is chaotic and when moderately busy they have a serious elevator problem (10+ minute wait times), but ok, I understand that in NY it is not easy to just add a few more.

3 times out of my 4 stays however my room clearly was not cleaned properly. Last time the bathroom looked like someone had used the room to clean the entire cleaning staff's buckets (they comped my bar bill to make up for the inconvenience after I complained with the GM). And this time there were all kinds of little hairs on the wall of the shower. Now I am not a germafobe but there are certain minimum standards one should be able to expect for $300+ a night which include a clean bathroom and a vacumed room and entrance area... When I checked out this morning I mentioned this and got an 'Ohh, please come again' from the lady at the front desk. Very frustrating.

Stayed here couple nights for last 4th of July Holiday. The suite was located on top 41st floor of the hotel with large bay windows and incredible views of the Empire State Building and Chrysler building. The location of this hotel (near Grand Central) and its amazing views makes this hotel an ideal choice when visiting Manhattan. Service is just ok, but that's New York.

Typical business oriented Westin, great location to Grand Central. Nothing to really brag about, pretty typical. Did not have the green choice option at check in. Really pricey.

Normally this hotel is great, but during my stay this week, service was a bit off.  The hall on the 21st floor smelled like raw sewage and the smell leaked into my room.  One day there was body lotion and body wash in the shower (not shampoo and conditioner), but nothing on the sink.  The next day there was nothing in the shower but only conditioner on the sink. Also, there were 3 packs of decaf in the room, no regular and the cleaning people let their cleaning bottles on the desk.  Just not the same quality service you usually expect with a Westin.

Mildow smell in the room, forever long wait time, called room service three times for towels and never received them.. how is this hotel so expensive? Service and quality are seriously lacking! The bed is comfy & there's more space than most NYC hotels.. but not worth it.

My wife and I were VERY impressed with this hotel.  First, the location is terrific and centrally located.  Although it's not a 5 star hotel, the staff treated everyone as if it was.  I have been to many NYC hotels and, even in fairly nice ones, you get TINY rooms with cruddy bathrooms.  The room was great.  Everything new, clean and pretty big for a NYC hotel.  Open our blinds and are staring at the Empire State Building.  My wife and I were very happy with our stay.  The gym was also very good for a hotel.  We used it everyday.  My ONLY nit-pic is that the TV system was a pain (took too long for the remote to change the channels so we were constantly shaking the remote at the TV).  Again, a nit-pic, but the only criticism that I could come up with.

    Will definitely be back.

Second time at this hotel and it is hands down my fave East side stay.  I'll be completely honest, I didn't really expect much from this hotel when I first stayed in January for work but I loved my stay so much that I totally wanted to stay again last week.

The hotel was formerly the New York Helmsley hotel. It had been renovated and Starwood did an amazing job.  Each time I was given a large corner room.  When you walk in, there was a bit of a "hall" where you turned face the room. In January I had a great view where I could even see the 59th St. bridge not to far off, but this time a view to the West where i can see a bit of the river and the beautiful Chysler building up to the left.  Both times rooms smelled fresh as if they sprayed the room with a clean neutral scent. The bed was comfortable - muy importante.

From check-in to check-out, you get friendly service. One morning I called the front desk for something and received it within 10 minutes. The front desk then called me back to make sure that it arrived. I loved it.

The hotel also has a full gym - you get treadmills, elliptical, free weights and machines - even the assisted smith squat machine as well as complimentary green apples It was never difficult at all to catch a cab and there was also a Starbucks a few steps away.

I really enjoyed my stay. It is now my East side choice.
