Christine Quinn was once the frontrunner in the Democratic Primary for mayor but as the campaign rolled on she steadily slipped in the polls and eventually finished third in Tuesday's election.
If Quinn had won the nomination and general election she would have been the first female Mayor of New York, but according to an article published in the New York Times, her failure to take the primary has stirred debate about whether the fact that she is a woman, and gay, played a role in her struggle to win voters.
New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor says from the outset, gender issues were not on Quinn's radar.
"What we found is that Quinn did not necessarily do the best job anticipating these kinds of issues and heading them off. There was actually a group of very high-powered women who urged her to a better job tackling the very tricky gender stuff that any female candidate comes across and she really wasn't interested," said Kantor.
