banc cafe

Posted on 17:25 by Unknown
This is another one of those places that is not all that old, but has been around Kips Bay for a while...every time I go by in the summer, I see people eating very happily at the outdoor tables.

 I wonder what Yelper's say...

Again, pretty favorable but some people of course cannot stand the place! (What else?)

My friend and I decided to just stroll in for Sunday brunch. I had my fears and doubts as, if you know NYC at all, Sunday brunch is not just a casual occasion on which you walk into a brunch restaurant and expect to find seating within the next 200 minutes.

Actually, I was pleasantly surprised. Banc was populated but the interior was so huge that it was absolutely no problem finding space. We sat comfortably at 11:00am, which is an absolute miracle in NYC Sunday brunch-life.

The menu was so cheap my jaw dropped. For brunch, hardly anything was over $14. I ordered a salmon eggs benedict for an eye-popping $11. Have you ever gotten salmon eggs benedict for $11?! It was the same price as a regular eggs benedict. To this day I still can't get over this pricing.

When the food came, it was a very generous portion with a large salad and home fries that were not a greasy mess on the side. As a brunch expert used to wilted salads and greasy potato bits, this was also a pleasant surprise. I really enjoyed catching up with my friend here as the ambience was very classy, quiet, and well-decorated. Although it looks super fancy inside and out, don't be fooled as you can definitely afford the food here.

Banc is a trusty neighborhood spot that you cant help but love. It's solid and cute enough that you end up going over and over again.

    Can't go wrong with:
-watermelon martinis. I love the huge chunk of watermelon in there!
    -jalapeno margaritas
-whatever cucumber drink is on the hh menu
-tuna tartare (didn't see it on the menu last time but ordered it anyway)
    -goat cheese croquettes
    -fries

I've had other items off the menu and nothing was ever bad. Get anything from the list above and you won't be disappointed. Good food, friendly bartenders, nice atmosphere, verrrry STRONG drinks... what else do you need?

I decided to try something new with my boyfriend on a Friday night and decided this place looked popular and gave it a go. We were seated immediately and I actually loved the corner booths and the fast service. That right there was the only good part of the meal..

We ordered the lobster mac and cheese ($15) , the filet mignon (32) and the angel hair pasta (19).   Now the lobster mac and cheese has to be the biggest disappointment ever. For something at $15, I better see CHUNKS of lobster, especially after experiencing Lobster Joint's happy hour specials of $4 lobster sliders... Instead what we got was tasteless mac and cheese with like 3 tiny lobster pieces. I almost missed the lobster piece on my plate until my bf pointed it out. the lobster piece tasted frozen. the actual mac nd cheese was sooo bland. Even after putting extra salt and pepper, it still tasted like cheesy nothing. What a waste of money.

My filet mignon was average. Once again the sauce didn't stand out and the steak was tasteless. I ran out of sauce half way because I kept dipping my steak in it to give in some sort of flavor. I have been to a lot of steak houses and the steak here was definitely on the dry side although they got the medium rare correct. The potato croquette that came with it was a nice touch. I ordered this to satisfy my steak craving and it actually made it worse because now I am longing for a REAL juicy steak, not this.

The angel hair pasta was average. Nothing special. Just chunks of chicken, tomatoes, peas and pasta. Portion was average, although the price was too high for simply plain pasta. I imagined it cost less than $5 to make. Not satisfied at all, although compared to my experience at Sauce, this was def an upgrade.

The thing that also bugged me was that it took like 10 min for the waiter to come and get the check, and I even had to flag him down for it. I guess it's because they are use to people jsut sitting around and chatting so it is understandable. Overall it was a new experience, I enjoyed the vibe and setting but I did not enjoy the food and was not happy to pay that price.

I found this place right before my birthday which is New Year's Eve. I made reservations after exploring the menu here on Yelp. I needed a place that was open on my birthday since we were going to Radio City Music Hall that night to see Nas. I searched and searched for days and there weren't many places open where the menu had choices..I an extremely pretty picky eater. lol

When my friend and I arrived we immediately loved the vibe. The restaurant is an old bank with vintage elements and modern, definitely a good mix, dimly lit but not so much where its annoying.

After we were seated and given menus I was pissed because I wanted to try the lobster raviolis and they were no where to be found. I inquired and was told by the waiter that they cost too much to make. Oh well, life goes on. We then decided to order the lobster mac and cheese, Angel Hair Pasta, Saute Jumbo Shrimp & Sea Scallops and we'd spilt it all. What great choices we made! Everything was amazing! We didn't have any complaints at all, even my Birthday Champagne was good. Before our food came the staff put out balloons to make the place New Years Eve Festive. It really looked nice.

My friend and I really loved this place and have been back again since Dec. 31st. This time we ate outside at the sidewalk café and ordered the Saute Jumbo Shrimp & Sea Scallops again. But this time we had more drinks the crab cakes (excellent by the way) and the Molten Chocolate Cake filled with melted chocolate, a plate with strawberries, blueberries, chocolates sauce topped with whipped cream. All I can say is "I WILL BE BACK!!" That dessert was to die for!! Thank you Banc Café!

Came here during my lunch hour with a few colleagues. Upon entering this place, you automatically get the feeling that this place is for an older crowd (middle-aged clientele, lighting, and decor). Once we were seated by the hostess, we were immediately poured glasses of water and given complimentary slices of bread. However, our waitress took a bit long to get to our table (and I think this was because she was the only waitress in the entire restaurant). Anyway, she showed up and took our orders. I ordered the cobb salad and it was delicious! My colleagues were also pleased with their meals.

Amazing food, above average lunch prices, slightly below-average service

Ever since a close friend moved into the hood where Banc Cafe is located, I make it a point to eat there. The servers are ALWAYS, ALWAYS friendly, chatty and smiling. The food is GREAT! And the jars with vodka infused -insert flavor here- are EXCELLENT! I recommend the jalepeño infused vodka for your Bloody Mary... Oh, and the guy bartenders are friendly and "C U T E" (if I may say so) and the ladies waiting tables are not sore on the eyes either!
