Cute little cafe to hang out with a laptop, enjoy your coffee and simple yet delicious lunch. Offering a decent variety of wraps, sandwiches, breakfast items and baked goods, you're sure to find something to fill that emptiness in your stomach! An added bonus - the owners inject a little middle eastern flavour into the menu. My husband really enjoyed his falafel wrap.
This cafe is not fancy but good and cheap. Get a wrap for $7-8 and an iced coffee to treat the heat!

Manhattan, NYI have a thing for omelettes. And greasy claustrophobic metal spiral staircases that lead to grody steam-room styled restrooms and basement food storage. The latter aside, this place is pretty generic - the Israeli salad is imo bland: Veggies. Washed. Chopped. Tossed in recipe proportions to satiate but not quite satisfy.

When in the UES, Effy's is where I go to grab a quick bite to eat. There's no waiter service so it's affordable and no one is around to rush patrons if they choose to sit with their laptops and chill, either outside or in. Most of their items are pretty good. I like their chicken sandwich, it's wholesome made with avocado and could be less wholesome but made tastier by adding turkey bacon. Their chicken Caesar salad is light on dressing and heavy on croutons, much to my chagrin, but it's still a good option for lunch. The smoked salmon bagel with white fish and scallion cream cheese, is bursting with favor and filling at around $10. An item I didn't particularly warm to is the chicken salad wrap, it had way too many peppers and felt messy. The café prepares yummy milkshakes and the menu has an assortment of different breakfast items, from Israeli to American options.
*It would be nice if credit cards were accepted. Luckily my bank has a branch a block away, but it's still an inconvenience to withdraw cash when I could've just used plastic instead. -

Manhattan, NYThis place is so close to my apartment, I was hoping it would become a regular brunch spot for us, but I probably won't come back.
It took at least 40 minutes from the time I ordered until my food arrived. My three friends had already eaten half their meals. I had the Mediterranean Platter, which basically consists of 4 pre-made salads, pita and three falafel balls. Apparently thats the time it takes to fry falafel balls. The man working there claimed that everything--EVERYTHING--was homemade. The "spanish eggplant" looked and tasted exactly like Sabre's brand, and the pita is clearly not homemade.
I will say that while I was waiting, I was given free refills on my iced coffee, and extra pita when my order finally arrived. Midtown West, Manhattan, NYEffys is simply, spectacular. Such a friendly environment to bring your laptop and work, have a delicious cup of coffee with a friend and just relax in your neighborhood while enjoying a typical middle eastern plate.
Effy himself is the nicest and very hard working to make sure you have a good time!
My favorite is summer time, where all doors are opened and a nice warm breeze comes into the cafe.
Check out this UES gem, trust me :)-

NY, NYSo thankful this place exists in the UES. This cute little coffeeshop is perfect for reading, working on your laptop, hanging out with friends, or people watching (thanks to the open windows/doors and patio seating). Of the many times I've been here, I've never had trouble finding a table. The free wi-fi is strong, as is the coffee (both huge pluses). The only downside is that there doesn't appear to be any AC (only ceiling fans), so if you're sitting inside on a really hot day, you'll start to feel slightly uncomfortable. -

This is a great place for a breakfast or lunch.
Nice ambiance, fresh and tasty food. I love the Shakshuka, Hummus and Falafel.
They also have their own blend of tea. Great flavor.
Free wi-fi, friendly staff - overall, very recommended. -

Effy's does some things well and other things, not so much.
I'm a superfan of their breakfast wraps, particularly the Energy Wrap (eggs, sauteed spinach, smoked turkey, and cheddar cheese; $6.95, plus another $1 to have it made with egg whites). I also dig their espresso, pretty strong and not too bitter, and fresh juices (Carrot, Ginger, Celery for me; $3.95 for a large, which is pretty good). And you can get these breakfast foods all day, because that's how they roll at Effy's. The sandwiches are okay (the Grilled Mozzarella - $6.95 - is good; but the Grilled Cheddar Cheese with roasted peppers and spinach is, at $9, too expensive for its simplicity).
But the biggest disappointments are the falafel and hummus, which are both virtually bland. You'd get more flavor by just breathing in the vapors of the nearby Starbucks. These items are featured in many of the Cafe's dishes (Hummus Sandwich, a Mediterranean platter, Falafel Wrap, Chicken Wrap, the list goes on), so their humdrum-ness is a big bummer, particularly considering the Cafe's heritage.
Delivery is always fast. I've never dined in, actually, but the renovation does make it look like a classy, comfortable place to sit and work on your screenplay (or what have you) - just be prepared and order carefully. -
