Pio Pio

Posted on 17:51 by Unknown
This is another one of those little places on East 34th Street in Murray Hill. I think I tried to do it before but there were not enough reviews or something.

So let me look again..Very good reviews for the food, but people do not like the rude waiters they got here; some will not go there again because of that

Peruvian chicken with the fixings and sangria for $25 pp - yes please!
Super tasty chicken that came out very quickly which was perfect since we were starving! Attentive and quick service. Sides were ok but once you put the spicy green sauce on, everything tasted good!
Restaurant is small and narrow but wasnt too crowded when we were there so we got to sit and chat without being rushed due to the crowds they sometimes can have.

overall really tasty food on the cheap.

It was my first visit. The food was good. The waiters were extremely attentive. My date and I weren't as hungry as we though, we went to talk and we did just that. The downside for us, it was terribly small. My date is a pretty big guy and he looked like he was squished up. We enjoyed immensely, although I haven't tasted the "fan faves". I will go back.

PS - the sangria was very good.We had a pitcher.

Pros: Food was inexpensive, great sangria.

Cons: rude waiter, food took for ever, and the waiter wasn't very attentive to our table.

    Never going there ever again.

We are new to the city and I searched online for good chicken (yeah I was really craving chicken), and this restaurant popped up!
The restaurant was very tiny, but I was prepared for that. The chicken is great and very tender! I think the green sauce is not bad, but not that spicy like some people said. As for the service, it's just mediocre. Will go back again for the food!

I went to Pio Pio with pretty high expectations, as it's been rated very highly on this and other sites, and my friend recommended it to me some time ago. I wasn't quite disappointed, but let me list some of the problems with the meal I had.

A couple of things were really salty: the ceviche, salchipapas, and rice and beans. Apart from that, the ceviche was a bit spongy, rather than firm and flaky, so the fish used wasn't as fresh as it ought to have been. The chicken itself was pretty good, but I honestly struggled to taste any difference between it and rotisserie chicken from a supermarket. The salchipapas were okay, but the sliced frankfurters that came fried with the fries tasted like crappy packaged stuff, not anything special or unique. Overall, my friend and I spent $48 + tip, and it's true that we got a pretty good amount of food, but none of it was really excellent or outstanding. It was overall just okay--not bad, but not really good either. Even the waiters seemed unenthusiastic and inattentive, we had to wait for a while to get our check and there were only two other tables occupied in the place!

On the other hand, it was nicely decorated and the food was decent, so I can't complain too much. I'd say to head to Pio Pio if you've never been there before and are looking for some semi-expensive fun. I'll never bother going there again, though.

Excellent rich-tasting empanadas with acidic salsa on the side to start with.  Customary savory and tender Peruvian chicken (same as Boston Market rotisseries) with the special green spicy sauce will add some kick. Beef arroz chaufa was a little heavy on salt but manageable and portion size was enough for 2 people. Small abode that can easily be missed when walking on the street.  Great ambiance and subdued noise that's enough for people to chitchat even with the compact space. Great ambiance. Quick service!

Pio Pio was recommended by friends. If you blink, you might miss the entrance.

Marvelously moist and flavorful Peruvian-style baked chicken served with choice of side (I chose yellow rice and beans), a Peruvian soda (reminded me of Mountain Dew), and a side avocado & tomato salad for under $10 for lunch. Pics uploaded.

Lots of garlic flavored the chicken.

Will return for a whole chicken to split among friends, and the sangria recommended by others.

Small gripe:  Seating is tight, even by NYC standards.

Tip:  Don't miss trying the odd looking green sauce with nice kick.

Pio Pio is always a treat. We had a whole chicken, fries, avocado salad and fried plantains. All were delicious. The green sauce was spicy deliciousness.

    We love Pio Pio!

Known for their chicken and they sure delivered their chicken!

Small place, fills up fast-beat the dinner rush by going early.

Ordered the first Chicken Combo-substituted rice and beans for the fries (I highly recommend this trade). The combo was enough for 2 of us, with even some chicken left over. With the combo, you get an entire chicken-really juicy and tender meat. The rice and beans and avocado salad was the perfect compliment to the chicken. It was a very very delicious meal.

The service was very very fast-we ordered and 5 mins. later, they came out with all the food. Quick delicious meal.
