Jean Claude II Bistro

Posted on 17:55 by Unknown
Little French Bistro LOOKS nice enough but I have long since learned not to be very much impressed by that..

Let us check Yelp--not a lot of reviews and mixed opinions. Suggest you read them carefully.

I like this place. it's a pleasant neighborhood bistro, without pretensions to be anything more than it is. Friendly and comfortable.  The menu isn't huge, but mostly everything is well prepared; there are a few items that really shine out, and there is usually a special worth ordering.

A few things that pop to mind:

the spiced squid and the escargot appetizers are fantastic. the former is a nod to what north africa has brought to french cuisine, the latter is pure france, with a great hit of garlic and parsley in the sauce

the hanger steak is delicious, and the potatoes dauphinoise on the side are amazing. the duck breast with the honey glaze is really good, although the portion is a bit small (if this place has an overriding flaw, i'd say it is portion size. i don't need a huge galumphing plate of food, but id prefer they erred a little more on the side of a larger rather than smaller portion) and the side vegetable is an astounding warm lettuce and shitake thing. while i love mushrooms, shitake are not my favorites usually, but here they are perfectly balanced by, and add body to, the wilted warm lettuce. this dish is so simple, and yet it blew me away the 1st time i tried it. one of the most unexpected great taste synergies i've ever had, in such a rustic guise.
They do a nice salmon, and i (surprisingly) haven't yet tried the skate, mostly because im rarely in the mood for couscous (the side) when i'm there. maybe next time.

the only dish i was disappointed with was the pork loin, which i found to be a little dry. but maybe that was a one time error, i don't know

Their chocolate moose is dynamite - super dense and chocolate, but again, i'd like a slightly larger portion

so - summary - cute place, friendly people, good food, easy atmosphere.

    enjoy

You will get ripped off here. It is so overpriced. I'm into spending a lot of money on small food portions if they are good, but this food was not.

I like the cute and cozy atmosphere, but I found the food disappointing. The beet and endive salad was generous and fresh, but visually unappealing because they toss the cubed beets with the chopped endive, giving the entire dish an unappetizing pink hue. The fish soup, which was a special, was not at all what I'd expected, and had I been given a description of it from the waitress, I wouldn't have ordered it. Hearing "fish soup," I expected a clear or creamy broth, maybe with leeks, onions, potatoes, and chunks of fish. What I got was a bowl of homogeneous thick, brown, peppery liquid -- any fish that was in there was pureed. A crouton with a mayonaissey spread sat atop it. Just not for me.

Had lunch here last week was not the best of experiences. Out of a selection of maybe 6 or 7 beers all they had was Stella how does a restaurant stock just. 1 beer when they advertise many is beyond me. The waitress brought my beer with out a beer glass I guess she expected me to swig it straight from the bottle. When I asked for a glass she didn't seem to pleased. My beer glass arrived but it was dirty I had to take a glass from the table next to me the waitress wasn't to happy that I took a glass from the other table I can tell by her body language. I ordered steak au poivre at best it was just mediocre...nothing special at all. I have been living here for more than 20 years I have seen many places come go around here only the strong will survive. This place in my opinion will not survive here...maybe somewhere else in NYC but not here.

Our family went here for dinner and had a good time. The portions / prices are fair for the location. We really enjoyed the steak and fries. Definitely a good neighborhood place to add to the list!
